How We Do It
Hundreds of volunteer hours are spent making the regional fair both a success and an unforgettable experience for our youth. This year’s regional fair will be hosted by Winona State University in Winona on Friday February 22nd. Students from throughout SE Minnesota and Western Wisconsin will present over one hundred papers and projects. Approximately 20 students will win advancement to the state fair*, and one student from our region will go on to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix in May.** Fair volunteers, many of them science educators and engineers themselves, contribute more than 400 hours of time to plan and stage the fair. Host facilities contribute exhibition space, classrooms, and in-kind services to make the experience a memorable one for students. *We are one of only two regions in the state that pays for registration fees for projects that advance to state. ** ISEF requires a minimum of 15 senior division projects in regional competition to advance a finalist to Phoenix. How Can You Help? Businesses and individuals can support our efforts by sponsoring a state entrant ($175.00); an award for one of 22 categories of research; or you can contribute to the fair directly to help us defray our expenses, ($12-15,000/annually). Either way, your contribution encourages students to be the best they can be in science and engineering. They are after-all, our future. Contributions are tax deductible. Contributions, sponsorships, and awards can be sent to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, c/o Debra Martin, Treasurer, 700 Terrace Heights, Winona, MN 55987.
